This is a private pond owned by the Marshfield Rod and Gun Club. Every year they put on
a fantastic fishing derby for children of the south shore. It is a very well run event with
prizes for the kids in multiple age groups. They stock this pond with a mix of rainbow and
brook trout of various size. Many of the fish are in the 12-14" size, but they put some real
whoppers in here as well, to spice the action.
There are basically two areas to fish - a large area in the middle with plenty of shoreline
and a shallower end with limited shoreline. Last year was my daughter's first year fishing
in the derby and since I didn't realize they stocked the pond with trout, I had not prepared
her with trout-catching gear and methods. Hence, we fished away from the beaten path where she
loaded up on perch and sunfish in decent sizes. This year I promised her she would catch her
first trout, which she did, - a beautiful brookie listed here. However, this center area of
the pond seems devoid of the other species and she caught nothing else.
This year the weather was a bit cold for the kids and we didn't last as long as we did the previous
year. The cool weather didn't hamper the crowd, though, as it was literally elbow-to-elbow people.
Despite the crowd and weather, the picture of my daughter with her first trout is priceless.
